How do I know if my dryer vent needs cleaning?
A dryer vent gives plenty of warning before it becomes a problem. The signs are easy to miss because they arrive gradually — a cycle that takes a little longer, a room that feels a little warmer — and because each one on its own is easy to explain away.
Here is what each sign actually means, and which ones should not wait.
Clothes are still damp after a full cycle
This is the clearest sign, and usually the first one anybody notices. A dryer works by moving hot air through the drum and pushing the moisture out through the duct. When the duct is restricted that moist air has nowhere to go, so it stays in the drum and the clothes stay wet.
If you are running a second cycle to finish a normal load, the run is restricted. Nothing about the dryer itself has failed.
The laundry room gets hot while the dryer runs
Heat that should be leaving through the vent is staying in the room instead. This is the same restriction seen from the other side, and it is the version that costs money — the dryer runs longer and hotter to move the same air, and the electric bill follows.
A burning or musty smell during a cycle
Treat a burning smell as urgent. Lint is fuel, and a restricted duct is where heat accumulates. The U.S. Fire Administration attributes roughly 2,900 home dryer fires a year to failure to clean.
A musty smell is less alarming but still worth acting on. It usually means moisture is sitting in the duct rather than being carried out of it.
The exterior hood flap no longer moves
Go outside while the dryer is running and look at the hood on the wall. The flap should swing open. If it does not move at all, very little is getting through — and if it is painted shut, screened, or missing altogether, the problem is the termination rather than the duct.

It has simply been a while
The absence of symptoms is not evidence of a clear duct. It means the restriction has not yet reached the point of being obvious. If it has been more than a year, that is reason enough on its own.
